Wideopen Medical Centre: Diazepam for Flight Anxiety
Following a review of current medical guidelines and best practice, the doctors at Wideopen Medical Centre have decided that we will no longer prescribe diazepam for fear of flying.
Diazepam (a Class C/Schedule IV controlled drug in the UK) is not considered appropriate for this purpose under current clinical guidelines. If you still wish to explore this option, you are welcome to consult a private GP, and we also recommend discussing over-the-counter alternatives with your pharmacist.
We appreciate that fear of flying can be distressing. For support and practical strategies, we encourage patients to explore the following resources:

Why We No Longer Prescribe Diazepam for Fear of Flying:
- The British National Formulary advises against prescribing benzodiazepines like diazepam for short-term or mild anxiety, such as flight-related fears. It should only be used for severe, disabling anxiety or distress, and only for short periods.
- NHS prescribing regulations state that medications should not be prescribed solely in anticipation of an issue occurring while abroad. Fear of flying, without an ongoing anxiety disorder, does not meet the threshold for treatment under these guidelines.
- Flight anxiety does not fall within the scope of routine NHS General Medical Services.
- Diazepam can cause sedation, drowsiness, and impaired judgment, which may affect a passenger’s ability to respond to emergencies or care for dependents during a flight.
- Certain countries restrict or prohibit the import of controlled substances like diazepam. Travelling with such medications can result in legal complications. See the NaTHNaC Travel Health Pro website for up-to-date information on medication rules abroad.
We appreciate your understanding and are happy to discuss other ways to manage travel anxiety. Please speak to a GP or pharmacist for support.
