Planning a Trip Abroad? Don’t Forget Your Free UK GHIC!

If you’re a UK resident planning to travel overseas, make sure you have your UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) sorted before you go!

The UK GHIC has replaced the old European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). While existing EHICs are still valid until their expiry date, anyone needing a new card will now apply for a GHIC.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • What it covers: The GHIC gives you access to medically necessary state healthcare in the European Economic Area (EEA) and select other countries (like Australia and Montenegro) on the same basis as a local resident. This includes A&E visits, emergency treatment, and routine care for pre-existing conditions.
  • It is 100% FREE: The card is completely free and lasts for up to 5 years. Warning: Always apply through the official NHS website. Avoid unofficial sites that try to charge you a fee!
  • It’s NOT travel insurance: While the GHIC is essential, it does not cover private medical care, mountain rescue, or being flown back to the UK (medical repatriation). The NHS strongly advises getting private travel insurance alongside your GHIC.
  • Easy to apply: You can apply online with your National Insurance number, and you can easily add your spouse, civil partner, or children to your application so the whole family is covered.

Cards typically arrive by post within 15 working days of approval, so be sure to apply well in advance of your trip.
